Every organization has an origin story. Ours begins on the streets of Flint, Michigan. The board grew up in Flint — a city that has faced more than its share of hardship but has never stopped producing people who fight for something better. Our Co-Founders earned the Bill & Melinda Gates Scholarship, one of the most competitive and prestigious academic awards in the country. This award is given to students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and a commitment to giving back to their communities.
The scholarship opened doors. But it also deepened a question that had been forming for years: What happens to the people we left behind?
From Flint, With Purpose
Flint taught us lessons that no classroom could. We watched families struggle to stay in their homes. We saw what happened when people lacked access to financial education. It wasn't that they were incapable. It was simply that no one had ever sat down with them. No one explained how credit works, how to build toward homeownership, or how to turn a business idea into something real.
We also witnessed the power of small interventions. When a neighbor helped a family understand their lease, or when a workshop taught a single mother how to read her credit report, we saw massive ripple effects. These small acts led to significant changes in lives.
That is what we wanted to build. Not a large institution. Not something complicated. Just our own little organization, rooted in who we are and where we come from. We created it to give back in the most direct way we know how.
Why We Named It Evergreen
Evergreen trees don't shed their leaves in winter. They stay green — steady, rooted, and alive — even when conditions are hard. That is exactly what we want for the families and individuals we serve. We aim for not just temporary relief, but lasting stability. We want to provide resources that stay with you. Foundations that hold.
Evergreen Community Capital was formally incorporated in March 2026 as a Michigan nonprofit corporation. We are organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Our mission is simple: to provide lasting resources that help individuals and families build stability, ownership, and opportunity.
What We Do
Our work is organized around four core program areas, each designed to address a different dimension of economic stability:
Housing Stability & Homeownership — We help families find and keep stable housing. We guide them through first-time homebuyer programs and help them understand their rights as tenants and landlords.
Financial Empowerment — We teach budgeting, credit-building, debt reduction, and wealth-building strategies through workshops and one-on-one coaching.
Entrepreneurship & Small Business Development — We support aspiring entrepreneurs with startup training, mentoring, microenterprise development, and access to capital preparation.
Community Investment & Economic Mobility — We build partnerships, support workforce readiness, and develop community leaders who invest back into their neighborhoods.
The Importance of Community Support
Community support is vital for our mission. We believe that when we come together, we can create lasting change. Each person who joins us strengthens our efforts. Together, we can build a network of support that uplifts everyone.
We invite you to be part of this journey. If you or someone you know needs housing support, financial coaching, or help building a business — we want to hear from you. If you believe in what we are building, we would be honored to have your support.
This Is Just the Beginning
We are a new organization, and we are proud of that. We are not trying to be everything to everyone. We are focused on being exactly what our community needs — present, practical, and persistent.
As we grow, we will continue to listen to the needs of our community. We will adapt and evolve, ensuring that we remain relevant and effective. Our commitment is to empower individuals and families in Michigan by providing lasting resources in housing, finance, and entrepreneurship. This will ultimately foster economic mobility and collective prosperity within our communities.
With love and purpose —
Evergreen Community Capital
